TDM 012: SLINGING IN THE RAIN

TDM 012: SLINGING IN THE RAIN

00. Arrival

You come out of the water, the Nameless Island's own inherent energy drawing people in. It's like being suspended between realities and abruptly pushed from behind through a rift in dimensions. It may make you sick, or that might be the motion of the ocean, lifting you to the surface and carrying you to shore.

Waterlogged and covered in sand, new arrivals will be greeted by robots who welcome them with towels and bracelet devices. The A5 card is already loaded up. If you don’t manage to get away from them quickly enough, they may even usher you toward the Laid Bare Spa, where new arrivals will be offered free massages, a sauna, hairstyling, and their clothing may come up permanently missing. But you will be given a complimentary towel to leave with if needed!

Feel free to explore the Island, though there isn’t much to see beyond what arrivals before you have helped to rebuild. Most of the buildings are abandoned and in dire need of repair, and beyond the city lingers a thick fog that obscures much of the wilderness from view. Wander too far into this fog, and you will find yourself mysteriously looping back to where you began, your memories of what you were doing and how you got there erased.

With that in mind, it may be wise to stake your claim on a place to live in the now, whether a rundown apartment in the City, a tent on the beach, a bed in the barracks, or your own space at the House of Worship. Your inventory will be found a day later, wrapped up haphazardly and delivered to each person's makeshift home.

I. THUNDERBOLTS AND LIGHTNING

Erku's new arrivals may not be the only residents left dripping wet. Although the weather on the Island is almost always dreary, clouds begin to multiply and darken over the days before that first arrival, turning ominous shades of purple and blue which may look familiar to Islanders who have been around since Erku's beginnings. Perhaps robots will advise Islanders to fortify their shelters and get ready to accept refugees, and they hope their charges take the warnings to heart! When the rain finally falls, it is a non-stop torrent. Even though the weather is warm, the rain itself chills to the bone.

Shacks and beach tents won't stand up to the downpour for long, and the shabby apartments may leak and flood. New arrivals who aren't handy enough to make quick repairs may be forced to take shelter in the homes of current Island residents, or else huddle together in the 12 rooms of the barracks for the full week that rain falls on the Island. Cats, dogs, and little dragons will also be begging Islanders for a warm place to stay!

Beware of lightning strikes, too, because the skies rumble with thunder throughout the storm. Buildings and residences are frequently damaged by strikes. They say what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and that's very true on Erku - Islanders who are struck by the lightning might find themselves temporarily blessed with god-like super strength.

Such power might not always be a good thing for those who aren't used to wielding it, so please be careful not to damage your friends or property! Islanders may choose to keep their new powers, but a bingo square can be used to wish them away.

II. A TASTE OF ERKU

In need of shelter and credits? Then the robots have a task for you! Erku's robot population has taken note of how much Islanders seem to love the humble potato, and they want to contribute! Ready as always to please, the robots have filled the hospital cafeteria with mountains of potatoes in every imaginable variety and color: russet, red, gold, purple, chartreuse, sweet, savory, spicy, and so many more! But wait, there's more: they have provided knives, cutting boards, and peelers too, and are eager to see Islanders work their magic in their open cafeteria kitchen! Robots will monitor every dish produced, as they are eager to improve their food replication repertoire.

No worries if you aren't culinarily skilled, however. Islanders will be rewarded in credits for whatever they can contribute, whether it's a gourmet meal or simply a basket of peeled potatoes. Robot-provided potato preparations are also freely available to snack on while you work, though as always, they're liable to be spiked with something to encourage Islanders to get more "friendly" with one another. Of particular note is an invention the 'bots are quite proud of, sure to delight your organic tastebuds: the potato cocktail, which packs quite a punch and - strangely enough - tastes just like a hearty steak dinner?

III. NOSTALGIA FOODS

Seeking a bit of refuge and some comforting food to warm you up? Signs and flyers are out informing residents of the Straight From Home Special going on right now at the Flashbang diner! Come In For All The House Favorites! For the next few days anyone can walk in and receive a free meal (or two if you’re really nice) from the robot cooks behind the counter!

And it just so happens that they know exactly what you want. You will be served a meal of your favorite foods from home just the way you like them. Did you tell them? No. How did they know? Don’t bother asking, they’ll just say that the Cook Always Knows. The robot waitresses will make sure your drinks are topped up and you have everything you need, just like any hometown diner or pub you may have heard of.

Eating any of the foods will bring out such nostalgia. Feelings of fondness, sadness, longing, anything when you think about the memories of your past and even of recent events. You won’t be able to stop yourself from sharing those thoughts and feelings with those around you. You’ll want to talk about your life, your opinions on the weather, the sex you just had last night and in great detail. The waitresses are listening and so is everyone else nearby.

When you leave the diner you might just have to keep on sharing your thoughts about anything that comes to mind. Walk by someone you think is attractive? You’ll have to tell them. Don’t like someone’s outfit? Definitely have to tell them. Suddenly remembering having sex on the beach? Maybe the person next to you on the trolley won’t mind hearing all about it!

The effects of the nostalgia will last for half a day or until the completion of an auspicious act.

Demyx | Kingdom Hearts

Thunderbolts and Lightning

That sure was a torrent of water that was falling around them, and yet everything about this individual screams that they are in fact, bone dry. His leather coat looks dry, his hair untouched and the worst part, he’s not even doing anything.

It was quite possible that Demyx looked a bit silly otherwise, slinking about like he was trying to stay in the shadows and out of people’s notice which might in fact, make him look more suspicious.

When caught out, he might give a sheepish smile at anyone observing and a little half a wave.

Even passively, he wasn’t about to be cowed by his own element.

Nostalgia Foods

“Oh I don’t really have to…” Demyx protested a bit as he was ushed into a seat.

“I’m not really hungry!” He called to the robot, but he was kind of curious why they were so insistent on him eating something.

What was served to him was a plate of fish and chips and he stared at it a moment. It smelled good. They knew what he wanted? Did he want this?

Demyx stared at it a moment. If this was his favourite dish, he didn’t remember, but he decided it couldn’t hurt to try it. He took a fork up and cut off a piece of fish and began to eat. It was good but...there it was. A lemon wedge. He squirted it over the fish and smiled.

He couldn’t help himself after that, he couldn’t help but exclaim, “I’m so sick of everything.” He groaned.

In one of those shadows is Mugen. Taking temporary refuge from the rain, clearly chilled if the coloring of his lips is any indication, he's busy moving and trying to work up some more body heat without the rain beating down on him. Hair flattened, hoodie and sweats soaked, he looks a bit like a drowned rat. A drowned rat running in place.

At first, he ignores the fellow creeper of shadows, about to flip him off when he waves but he can't muster up enough shits to give to bother. An idiot he may be on a lot of things, but even he stops when he notices that this new dude doesn't look wet at all. Mugen is ready to march into the cold rain to follow him, but that's a pain in the ass so he opts to yell from under his awning and gesture at him.

"Oi. How the hell're you doing that?"
melodiouspacifist: (Nort Yeah yeah I'm on it)

[personal profile] melodiouspacifist 2021-04-23 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Despite the fact he's completely bone dry, Demyx still felt the chill thanks to the fact his coat was not really insulated for cold weather, at least he suspected it's because the big guys at the top didn't care if they were bothered by it or not.

Was he supposed to feel cold? Who could say?

At the question, he let out a nervous chuckle. "Uh, doing what?"
ondori: (hell're you doin here)

[personal profile] ondori 2021-04-24 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Don't bullshit me, asshole." Mugen shouts through the rain, volume only slightly lowered now that he has the other dude's attention. He doesn't shiver, though his skin is still ice cold to the touch. Waving a threatening arm, he gestures over himself and then in the new dude's direction, following it up with, "You cheating with some fancy ass magic or you always waterproof? Which is it?"

"Oh that!" Demyx snickered a little bit, getting closer to Mugen with a grin.

"Both, actually!" He grinned and held out his hand, collecting some of the water into a nicely formed ball.

With his free hand, he pointed it at Mugen and pulled aiming to get the water out of his clothes and back on the ground. "See? I can manipulate water so, if I don't want to get wet, I don't have to."

Nostalgia Foods!

Nao's been here long enough to know that no matter how well-intentioned the robots may be (programmed?), he's learned to be wary with just about everything he eats. It's fortunate though that since his arrival, he's made friends that he can trust should be ever find himself in...that kind of pickle.

From the corner of his eye, he glances over at the commotion, not recognize the guy. Looks like the robots roped in another one. It seems right around the time when the island would bring out an influx of new people. It's towards this time that he tries not to hope for much, to be able to see Taichi or even any of his friends again. The toast with strawberry jam and a side of scrambled eggs is hardly anything fancy, but it does remind him of breakfast time at home with his family.

The new guy's comment pulls him back from that kind of daydream.

"Man, you look stuffed! Haha, it must've been tasty for you to have that much. Is that your favorite food?"

Demyx had definitely eaten well, for whatever that meant, and he had no idea really what the effect of the food was going to be, or he would've avoided it. Him without a filter wasn't a terribly good idea, considering the precarious position he found himself in.

He looked over at Nao and smiled a little and shrugged helplessly.

"I honestly have no idea. I don't really eat that much. I don't know why I was feeling like eating this today."

Nobody physiology was fascinating, really. "It was really good though."

thunderbolts! rain! he doesn't mind fire guys, right?

[personal profile] flameproofed 2021-04-24 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Ace's own element wasn't of much use in the rain, but similarly, it was hard to hide it. He had his body temperature high enough that water vaporized on contact with his skin, and the steam rising from him was clearly visible.

He was looking out over the beach, trying to judge the storm while making sure there was no one caught out in the rain that might be in any danger. In a way, he was admiring nature, too... something about the storm was beautiful in its own way.

But it was hard not to notice someone that the water was missing completely. At first, Ace suspected the man was another Devil's Fruit user, because Ace was still new enough here that he didn't quite grasp that he was, maybe, the only person from his world here. Even still, Ace's first guess was that the man could generate some kind of invisible shield that was directing the water away from him... but the longer he looked, the less likely that seemed. The water didn't seem to be parting and wicking itself away like it was hitting an invisible umbrella, it was more like the raindrops were haphazardly making way for him sometimes, but also like even when it seemed the water did hit the man, it wasn't actually doing anything to him.

Maybe (no, definitely) Ace was staring for too long. The idea of a Devil's Fruit user with the ability to control water seemed contradictory in and of itself. He'd known of someone who could create ice, but he'd never seen anything like this.

"Hey!" he called, seemingly completely unaware that Demyx was attempting to escape notice, waving while moving towards him. "You look like you're staying pretty dry!"
melodiouspacifist: (Natural Look)

Nah, as long as they're fun! oh and also don't set him on fire >.>

[personal profile] melodiouspacifist 2021-04-24 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
Demyx was mildly startled at being interrupted from his sneaking but he moved it into a smooth half shrug and a wide smile. Nailed it. After all, his whole thing was making people believe what he wanted them to.

"Yeah, I know." He chuckled lightly. "I don't get wet unless I want to."

To distract from what was possibly a slightly vulnerable reaction - he definitely didn't want to give that impression - he waved his hand and some of the droplets around them started to blend together into a little ball of water about the size of his palm.

"See?"

Ace wasn't reading "vulnerable" out of Demyx, that was for sure. He was too intrigued by the idea of someone able to manipulate water. An ability like this could really wreck his shit; even a small amount of water could cause big problems for Ace. Which, admittedly, was a weird thing to think while standing in a downpour, but funnily enough, the rain wasn't a big issue. The water ball that Demyx had just made was a different story.

Just out of curiosity, Ace pointed his hand, a small fire "bullet" shooting from his finger. It dodged raindrops as it sped towards its target, but on contact with the water ball, Ace's fire extinguished in a puff of water vapor. Sure, it had done a little structural damage to the water ball, but not much.

If Ace was put-out by that himself, though, he didn't show it. He let out a shocked, but excited sort of noise, jumping back a bit. "Whoa! So cool!"

[personal profile] melodiouspacifist 2021-04-25 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
The fire appearing from the stranger's finger and going for his water ball has him a little surprised and ruffled. If water could wreck Ace's shit, fire could wreck Demyx's. It made no logical sense, but that was just the way it was.

His eyes were a bit wide at the fire, but since it was aimed at the ball and not him, he didn't do more than just smile placidly. His water wasn't vulnerable to fire, but he was. Ace could be quite dangerous to him, but Demyx wasn't exactly known for making the wisest of decisions. Not to mention, he was familiar with a firebrand and got along with him relatively okay.

"Isn't it?" Demyx slid into an easy grin. "I have control over water, it's pretty cool."
