He's larger than she is, but he's seen her handle weapons almost bigger than either of them; she may have him beat in raw strength despite her size. So he plays to his own strengths, instead--he's always been quick and evasive, and while that certainly won't work forever in a contest like this where the goal is more than just survival, it's a good way to set himself up for counterstrikes.
He pivots as she moves to grab him, aiming to use her own momentum against her, but the foot she plants trips him up just enough that she still manages to trap one of his arms and foil his plan. In retaliation, he grabs at that long ponytail of hers, trying to yank her back by the hair to gain some control over her movements and unbalance her enough to hopefully push her back.
