TDM 005: HAPPY SPOOKTEMBER

TDM 005: HAPPY SPOOKTEMBER

Arrival

This time, you come out of the water, the Nameless Island's own inherent energy drawing people in. It's like being suspended between realities and abruptly pushed from behind through a rift in dimensions. It may make you sick, or that might be the motion of the ocean, lifting you to the surface and carrying you to shore.

Waterlogged and covered in sand, new arrivals will be greeted by robots who welcome them with towels and bracelet devices. The A5 card is already loaded up. Feel free to explore the Island, though there isn’t much to see. Most of the buildings are abandoned and in dire need of repair, and beyond the city lingers a thick fog that obscures much of the wilderness from view. Wander too far into this fog, and you will find yourself mysteriously looping back to where you began, your memories of what you were doing and how you got there erased.

With that in mind, it may be wise to stake your claim on a rundown apartment, a tent on the beach, or a bed in the "comfortable" new barracks. Your inventory will be found a day later, wrapped up haphazardly and delivered to each person's makeshift home.

I. Harvest Hunt

As the daylight grows shorter and the muggy heat of the island’s summer gradually shifts to temperate days and chilly nights, Erku’s accessible wilderness explodes with a colorful collection of tempting fruits, fragrant-smelling herbs, and nuts and seeds plumped and ready for harvest. With warnings to beware of monsters, the robots of Erku encourage Islanders to take advantage of the land’s bounty by distributing basic camping supplies to those who are interested in exploring, hunting, and harvesting. They strongly encourage making the journey with a friend! Any surplus foods that Islanders bring home with them can be exchanged for credits with cafeteria robots! Just be careful out there - some of these fruits have strange effects once consumed.

For extra protection out there in the wilds, the robots have fashioned crowns of flowers or foliage to wear on their adventures. The sweet and herbal smells from the crowns will discourage most Erku-native monsters from approaching, they assure - this is ancient knowledge from the planet’s long-gone civilization, so it can’t be wrong!

What the robots don’t know is that the crowns have a deeper, more ritualistic purpose: after a few hours, the scent of flowers or herbs begins to awaken primal instincts within the wearer. Those who are wearing the foliage crowns feel overwhelmed by an urge to hunt, while those who wear the flower crowns delight in every opportunity to tease, outrun, and outwit the hunters. What happens when the chase ends? Well, that depends on the personalities and the chemistry between the hunters and their prey.

While the robots are very insistent on placing crowns atop the heads of any Islander they see, they aren’t stuck on in any way and they are easy to remove, which can prevent or break the hunting trance.

II. seeds and sap

Of particularly high credit value, the robots explain, is an elusive flower known as the skull sunflower. It appears exactly as one might imagine: at the center of an otherwise innocuous, towering sunflower is the gruesome visage of an open-mouthed skull. Don’t worry, the flowers are harmless! Even if it’s strange how the empty-socketed eyes seem to follow your every move. And why is it that the teeth - which, on closer inspection, are actually the seeds of the flower - only seem to chatter when your back is turned?

Any Islander who can withstand their heebie-jeebies long enough to collect the petals and seeds from the flowers will fetch a handsome reward in credits upon exchange with the robots. Beware the sticky, blood-red sap that seeps from the eyes of each skull, however. Those who absorb too much through their skin will begin to hallucinate, visions of frightening or emotional events from their past dancing in the shadows. One might even mistakenly imagine that another Islander is someone they recognize from their past, someone who meant something to them - no matter whether that person is alive or dead in the present.

The hallucinogenic effects of the sap can last for hours, or they can be shortened by a dip in the public baths.

III. Tarot

Night comes, and in the darkness, a robot sets up a table by the beach. A solitary candle sits in the center, illuminating a deck of cards. F̶i̴n̵d̸ ̸y̶o̸u̸r̵ ̵f̵o̸r̷t̵u̶n̶e̷?̴

The robot reveals tarot cards and will do a variety of spreads to tell your fortune. Each fortune can be distilled into one central theme, which characters will find pervades their life for the next 24 hours. There is magic afoot: it can be sensed, and perhaps even dispelled, if luck is on your side.

Though most robots on the island show a capacity for greater-than-average artificial intelligence, this pseudo-psychic 'bot -- M.S. Cl30 -- is less advanced. It only has six interpretations prepared:

  • Always watch your back. - Characters will be compelled to walk, or even speak, backwards for the duration of the day. Those who mishear it as "wash your back" may spend longer in the shower than usual.

  • Fake it til you make it. - Characters will feel compelled to act performatively. They will more readily fall into acts for serious or flirtatious roleplay, or try on costumes that reflect a particular persona they're interested in exploring. Faked orgasms will seem quite realistic.

  • You will receive an affectionate letter from a friend. - Just as it is said, someone will be compelled to engage in correspondence - and whether it turns dirty or not, well, that's up to you! Characters may also quite literally receive an article of clothing with a red letter sewn on the top. What could it stand for?

  • Hold on tight. - Characters who are given this life advice will start to feel rather clingy. They'll attach themselves to someone's side and refuse to leave, or they may find a "security blanket" item and won't let it go.

  • You are a generous, giving person. - Characters will feel compelled to do something kind for someone else. Maybe they'll invite someone to the movies, come over and cook, or do that thing their partner is always asking for.

  • Don't think. Feel. - Even if they weren't before, characters temporarily experience impulsive and hot-headed urges. They will also become very tactile.

[ What a surprisingly on-the-nose name. But he's not complaining; it rolls off his tongue easily when he tries it on for size. ]

Catra. [ He practically purrs it against her skin. ] Nice name.

[ Then again, right now? Everything about her is nice, from the way she strokes his ear to the way her thighs wrap around his waist and definitely to the way she palms him through his pants. His breath hitches in his throat and he bites down on her lower lip reflexively, though not hard enough to draw blood. ]

If that's what you wanted, you should have said so earlier.

[ He would do anything she wanted him to do, right now. All she has to do is ask.

Considering how his hands are being kept busy - though not in a bad way, the hand on her butt squeezing gently in apprecation - he ends up using his mouth to explore, pulling away so he can pepper kisses down her neck and across her collarbone, unafraid to bare his teeth and nibble against her skin, content for now to let her take the lead. ]

Ah that explains it. Does it mean we're destined to be together then?

[He has so few pleasures in life, Finn, let him this small bit of fun. He tries to take his coat off but it doesn't move Finn's hand off so it seems they are going to have to think creatively.]

Alright, there has to be a way to fix this but I think we should move this to a more private venue. Perhaps one of my colleagues can solve this for us since I'm out of ideas.

[ He does look to Peter this time, an eyebrow slightly raised. ]

James Tiberius Kirk is the captain I serve under on board the Enterprise.

[ The how in the world do you know him is implied. ]

I have traveled great distances in my own galaxy but have not come across that exact term... [ He kinda wants to apologize but it feels awkward and illogical to do so, so he doesn't.

He just shakes his head. ]
There is no pain that I am currently aware of. Merely hallucinations. However, they... seem to be receding. [ His mother doesn't look like his mother now. More like a dream of her or a ghost, something a lot less real than a moment ago. Something that's clearly fading.

He feels relief. And guilt for feeling relieved. And a great deal of sadness and pain for both. Well, it's not a headache. ]

[ Spock follows behind him and can't quite help the brief, small uptick of the edge of his lips.

Soon enough, they come upon what must have been the complex that Jim mentioned, something that's far from what Spock is used to living in. Though, considering how furnishings can come about, he supposes this is to be expected.

At least the company is more than adequate. ]

[ That makes two of them. Even if Annie had figured she'd live to the end of her thirteen years, sex usually came with a potential dangerous side effect: pregnancy.

In no world did she ever want to bring in a life to be lived like hers. So many reasons to not look twice at what is now... the flow of things.

Her head drops back against the rock, eyes closing.
]

It's not as bad surviving off the fringes here than elsewhere.

[ Point being, what passes for fringe living is easier here. For one, they have so many geese. She's already noticed this, and asked if anyone owns them, being definitively told no. Second, the forest is dangerous but fecund: and as one not concerned with going or coming, Annie can subsist on what windfalls come her way and not do too poorly. Mikasa clearly can do the same. Or as much as either can when their heads are getting messed with at the same time. ]

Anyway, that's if avoiding all the bullshit this place apparently tosses out.

she lifts both eyebrows.

So what did you name yourselves after?

[ Still eating tiny shovels full of sorbet, she lifts her shoulders in something like another shrug. ]

I'm here, aren't I? Either way, I was done before I showed up. Leave the heroing to the heroes.

When Zechs turned away, Heero wondered - just briefly - if he'd said the wrong thing. It wasn't a thought he had often, but these were very different circumstances, here in the Nameless City.

So Zechs trusted him. The question was, did he trust Zechs? That was a complicated question. The man had proven himself to be an ally just as often as he'd been their enemy. Zechs had a very clear morality, but a way of thinking that sometimes lead him to dangerous extremes in the name of defending his ideals.

But at the end of the day... both of them had stained their hands with blood, hadn't they? Heero couldn't pretend that he was any more or less righteous than Zechs Merquise.

"I see," Heero said solemnly. Trust was hard to come by; Heero wasn't going to take it for granted. "And you, what are your goals here?"
zechs_isonfire: (turned away - manga)

[personal profile] zechs_isonfire 2020-10-05 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Zechs was very certain the pilots - especially 01 - didn't trust him in turn. Why would they? He's done nothing to earn it, and quite the opposite, proven to be an unreliable ally, if the group's goals conflicted with his own. Even if those groups he'd worked with weren't always particularly moral people anyway.

But the question made him laugh, wry, and he closed his eyes for a moment.

"Here? Survive, I suppose," Zechs said honestly. "What government is there? What power, beyond that which holds us captive? Unless there's something we can attempt to strike at, which would free us."
lyingheart: (ask | tell me everything that happened)

[personal profile] lyingheart 2020-10-05 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
[ It's an interesting thought process to hear, and frankly, mind boggling: she doesn't doubt it, as that's (h...a...h) illogical, and she's a rational person when it comes to things not involving murder.

More or less.

But she doesn't blurt anything out at this, not even a protestation, just looks more... confused, before she reaches thoughtful.
]

Does that come into any conflict for you? Since you're both?

"There are worse things," she said, not smiling, but lifting her eyebrows like she'd possibly considered it. Then dismissed it. "But no, I don't appreciate strangers teasing in general. It's usually annoying and paired with wandering hands."

A lazy blink, and she gives him another sideglance. "Nothing I'm going to have to worry about here." In present company. She doesn't have that hope for the island as a whole, given its proclivities.

"You, however, look positively your age. How pleasant."

Utterly deadpan.
zechs_isonfire: (Default)

[personal profile] zechs_isonfire 2020-10-05 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Zechs met that glance with a nod. "I wouldn't direct my attentions where they weren't wanted. Even with this island's demands."

He suspected there would be plenty of people willing enough once he was prepared to cross that bridge.

Then, Zechs smirked, amused. "I'll take that as a compliment, I suppose, that one's new. I've heard all sorts of things said about my looks, of course, so you get points for originality."
lyingheart: (discuss | it didn't come easy)

[personal profile] lyingheart 2020-10-05 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
She only nodded in return. It was her philosophy as well, but also more of a nod to fair warning (not that he needed it, but she figured the robots and their Augur were listening regardless) that she would meet the untoward with appropriate consequence, given her mood.

Also, good on you, Zechs, you go get your best lay on!

"I'd assume most of them are compliments," she observed, shrugging again. "Depending on what passes for attractive where you're from. Longer hair's less common on men for me, even outside of the military. The rest is genetics and training."
zechs_isonfire: (14 inscruitable)

[personal profile] zechs_isonfire 2020-10-05 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
"They were, if empty ones." Zechs then smirked. "I took particular pride in performing well enough that my superiors didn't care about how I kept my hair. In a way, it was as much of a badge as my rank. At a certain level, making a fuss over petty regulations is pointless. Results are what counts."

And that should neatly sidestep why he wanted to keep it long to begin with.

How feisty.

[ that other hand of his fits itself along the small of percival's back, the way one might when preparing to lead a partner onto the floor for a proper quadrille or a waltz. it's a terrible simulacra of a courtly dance, because vaati stands far too close and his hands are far too inappropriately placed to belong in proper society. ]

We're going to play a guessing game. You're going to close your eyes and I'm going to move my hands around without actually touching you, when you think you know where my hands are - you'll guess. Then, I'll touch.

[ hovering on his heels, he arches his one brow, as though waiting for percival to refuse. ]

[ His gaze briefly flicks up to the crown on her head. He's lived here for long enough to know that if there's a strange accessory that the puppets are insisting everyone wear, those accessories are likely responsible for any strangeness that follows. ]

In this case, he finds he's not suspicious, offended, or any of the like. It's a logical question. ]

It is difficult to say if I have more or less conflict than other Vulcans, as I have no experience being fully Vulcan nor fully Human. There are those who would guess one way or another for a variety of reasons, though.

[ The Vulcan Elders would say it absolutely does. Starfleet Admiralty would say it absolutely does not. ]

Regardless of my genetics and ancestry, there are times when conflict can occur. However, I have witnessed similar conflict in those who are fully Vulcan, as well.

[ Percival's body tenses when he's gathered into Vaati's hold, face reddening in indignation and a bit of fluster at being handled inappropriately without permission. His curiousity over what Vaati is trying to suggest is the only thing that stops him from hitting the man immediately.

Even if he can understand the reason behind the strategy Vaati is employing, Percival isn't sure he likes the thought of closing his eyes and not knowing where he's going to be touched next. There's a sense of vulnerability there that's difficult for his prideful self to accept. ]

"Results count, but military officers being pedantic isn't strange, either." Another partial shrug, and no sign of her asking or wondering why he wore it long. Too many reasons, not enough interest or need to know.

However, she did ask about something related, remembering a few of the young women who had been through her second cadet training. "Do you ever braid it back at night for sleeping?"

Her dorm had been some sort of split, and the question felt... perfectly small talk, albeit in an odd way.

[ She's figuring out some sort of rhythm to his grinding, not exactly difficult, but also not exactly unstimulating, playing someone else's body and feeling their response. Part of her wants to hear more of that breathless, some edge of it, but he's still responding with words and she's not nearly distracted or inclined enough to not reply.

She just does it around wet kisses and nips at his neck, moving up towards his jaw, knee sliding just a touch along with the stroking pressure of her hand.
]

I'm not interested in easier.

[ As if that's supposed to answer his question. She does finally relent with the kissing, partly to shut him up, hey one hand gripping tightly in his hair. Some chasing is more appealing than others, but as far as flower influences go, teasing to her own ends was far preferable.

In a straight chase, she's not inclined to believe she'd get away.

Which would seem to argue it's not unique, you just get the added burden of people possibly telling you it does.

[ She doesn't make it a question, but it's soft, for a statement, delivered while looking off into the distance. Depending on direction, there wasn't strictly much distance in which to see, but looking outward during times of thought doesn't care about the scenery. ]

Thank you for answering, Commander Spock.

[ The whole building is evidently a little run down, like it had been abandoned for a while, but it's also not that horribly maintained. It's clear that there's been some improvement, areas where it's been recovered, and it looks inhabitable enough by this point.

Jim leads them up to the floor he's in, not too high up so he doesn't have to go up too many stairs, and he first guides Spock to his own flat so he can show it to him. It's pretty much bare bones for now, a small kitchenette and a table with two chairs, a tiny couch in a sitting area and a mattress laid out on the floor next to a corner that's serving as a bed. At least it's a pretty big one, and it has more than enough blankets that Jim doesn't get cold during the night. ]

There's running water and electricity, small working bathroom through there, [ He points to a door. ] The window is intact and all the doors work, which isn't the case in all of the rooms. Plus, the floor and ceiling are very stable and in decent condition. I know there are a number of flats still free on this floor, so we can check them out and pick one that's in good condition for you.

[ If all else fails he won't mind offering Spock a place to stay right here with him, but also... he's gonna be having a lot of sex, so that might make things a little awkward. ]
